Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested a woman identified as Joy, over alleged stealing of two babies in the State.
The Command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said the suspect stole the babies, aged three and four months, in two separate incidents.
According to him, the suspect deliberately befriended the victims to avoid arousing suspicion before carrying out the thefts.
Edafe explained that in the first incident, the suspect approached an 18-year-old mother of a three-month-old baby and told her she was looking for a nanny.

He said the suspect later returned to the woman’s residence, assisted her in caring for the baby and, after spending some time with her, claimed she wanted to buy sweets, and allegedly disappeared with the infant.
In the second incident, Edafe said the suspect visited a groundnut seller under the pretence of buying groundnuts while the woman’s baby was with her younger sister.
He explained that the suspect tricked the girl into fetching water for her and offered to hold the baby in the meantime.
However, she allegedly fled with the child before the girl returned.
Speaking in an interview with the police, the suspect admitted taking the babies, claiming she acted out of desperation after losing her twin babies during childbirth.
She said her husband was unaware of the deaths and had already made arrangements for their naming ceremony.
Edafe said the suspect was subsequently arrested and that the babies were recovered safely.
He added that she would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
