Nusantara (ANTARA) - Indonesia's government, the Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN), and the Australia-backed INOVASI program are expanding literacy and numeracy initiatives in Nusantara to strengthen students' reading comprehension and basic math skills.
INOVASI, or Innovation for Indonesia's School Children, is a joint Indonesia-Australia program focused on improving education policies and classroom learning outcomes nationwide.
"The literacy and numeracy program, running since 2024, has delivered measurable improvements in learning quality at partner elementary schools," OIKN Deputy Alimuddin said in Nusantara on Saturday.
He said the program's key achievement extends beyond student performance, including changes in teaching methods, school leadership, and supervisory support for educational improvement.
Teachers are encouraged to identify individual learning needs, use assessments to guide instruction, and provide more relevant and meaningful classroom activities.
School principals and inspectors have also taken a stronger role as instructional leaders focused on improving teaching quality and student outcomes.
The progress led to a Primary School Learning Quality Improvement Showcase in Nusantara on June 11, organized with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and INOVASI.
The event highlighted best practices adopted by elementary schools in Sepaku, a district supporting development of Indonesia's future capital in East Kalimantan.
The ministry's Director of Teachers and Education Personnel, Nunuk Suryani, said participating schools demonstrated tangible gains in literacy and numeracy performance.
Meanwhile, Education Policy and Development Agency head Toni Toharudin said construction of the new capital must be accompanied by investment in high-quality human resources through stronger education.
"Strengthening literacy and numeracy is essential for preparing a generation capable of critical thinking, problem-solving, and adapting to future challenges," he said.
