Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Tourism is intensifying the implementation of the Clean Tourism Movement program at tourist destinations across Indonesia as part of its efforts to advance sustainable tourism.
"We continue to strengthen the Clean Tourism Movement as part of the sustainable tourism development in destinations," the ministry informed ANTARA on Saturday (June 13).
The program promotes improved waste management, reduced use of single-use plastics, the provision of adequate cleanliness facilities, and greater awareness among tourists, businesses, and local communities to practice responsible tourism.
In addition, the movement is also backed by strengthening destination governance and visitor management, education and behavior change campaigns, waste management training for tourism human resources, and the implementation of the principles of Sustainable Tourism Destinations in accordance with Ministerial Regulation of Tourism and Creative Economy Number 9 of 2021.
"Thus, cleanliness is not just a temporary program, but a shared culture that supports the quality of the tourist experience, environmental sustainability, and the well-being of local communities," the statement remarked.
The Ministry believes that local governments have the best understanding of the unique characteristics, potential, and challenges of tourist destinations within their respective regions.
Therefore, their active participation is considered essential to ensuring the long-term sustainability and success of the movement.
"This Clean Tourism Movement is now aligned with the Safe, Healthy, Clean, and Beautiful Indonesia ASRI Movement, initiated directly by President Prabowo Subianto in February 2026," the ministry stated.
Going forward, the ministry will promote cleanliness at tourist destinations as a shared responsibility among relevant ministries and agencies, local governments, businesses, and tourism stakeholders.
It will also position cleanliness as a strategic priority that influences Indonesia's competitiveness in the global tourism market.
The Ministry of Tourism also conveyed that various Sustainable Tourism Development (STDev) programs will continue to be promoted through six flagship programs: Sustainable Tourism Destination (STD), Sustainable Tourism Observatory (STO), Sustainable Tourism Certification (STC), Sustainable Tourism Industry (STI), Sustainable & Responsible Marketing (SRM), and Sustainable Tourism Management (STM).
Launched in 2025, the Clean Tourism Movement (GWB) is a national campaign aimed at increasing awareness, promoting behavioral change, and strengthening waste management practices at tourist destinations across Indonesia, including Bali, through collaboration among government institutions, industry players, and local communities.
