
GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Flash floods triggered by heavy rains disrupted parts of Maasim and Maitum towns in Sarangani on Friday, June 13, stranding motorists and passengers after a bridge in Barangay Kanalo was rendered impassable, authorities said.
The Maasim Information Office (MIO) said in an afternoon advisory that the Kumaba Bridge had to be closed after floodwaters reached parts of its support structure, raising concerns over its stability.
Police and disaster response teams assisted stranded passengers and secured affected areas during the flooding.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) issued an advisory earlier in the day warning of rain, lightning, and strong winds over Sarangani, including Maasim and nearby areas.The bridge was reopened at 5:32 a.m. Saturday after waters receded and clearing operations were completed. The flooding came days after the magnitude 7.8 offshore earthquake struck west-southwest of Maasim.
In Maitum town, portions of the highway were submerged in knee-high floodwaters.
In this city, some parts in the downtown area were also flooded due to strong rains.
