A team of local fishermen has landed the largest documented Wreckfish ever caught on a fishing rod in Maltese waters, setting a new national record in the process.
The achievement was recently recognised by The Malta Records, which confirmed the fish weighed an impressive 50.8kg.
Known locally as the Ħanżir tal-Fond, the Wreckfish is a deep-water species capable of reaching remarkable sizes and is considered one of the Mediterranean’s most prized catches among anglers.
The record was set by Team Enigma X, made up of Josef Cassar, Clifford Zammit and Etienne Camilleri, who caught the fish aboard a Tuccoli 250VM on 30th May.
The Malta Records announced the achievement during a visit to Go Fish Ħamrun, where fishing enthusiasts had the opportunity to learn more about the record-breaking catch.
The milestone highlights the dedication, skill and patience required to land one of the sea’s most sought-after deep-water species and marks a proud moment for Malta’s recreational fishing community.
