Brazil and Morocco serve up the group stage’s first classic — and share the points

MetLife Stadium held 80,663 people on Saturday evening, and for long stretches of the first half, most of them were very quiet indeed.

Morocco were better than Brazil in the opening period, more organised, quicker in transition, more willing to press high. Brahim Díaz split the Brazilian defence with a ball that made Alisson look exposed, and Ismael Saibari ran onto it and chipped the goalkeeper with the assurance of someone who had been waiting for precisely this moment.

That was the 21st minute. Brazil, the fifth-ranked team in the world, were behind.

They equalised 11 minutes later and it was worth waiting for. Vinicius Júnior exchanged passes with Bruno Guimarães on the left flank, took two touches to create the angle, and rifled a right-footed shot past Yassine Bounou for his 10th international goal.

The second half was the game it had promised to be: two top-ten sides, neither willing to let the other settle, the ball moving end to end, chances falling on both sides.

Alisson saved Brazil in the final minutes with a double stop at 90+9′ from El Aynaoui and then Amaimouni off the rebound that preserved the point.

The result was fair.

Two concerns came out of Saturday that Ancelotti will want to address quickly: Casemiro came off at 37 minutes, very early, suggesting a physical problem, and Danilo followed him off the pitch at 43 minutes. Scotland top Group C — nobody saw that coming on matchday one

Jalen Brunson scored 45 points, including 13 consecutive in the fourth quarter that turned a deficit into a lead that New York would not relinquish.

His 45-point performance was a Knicks Finals record, beating Willis Reed’s 38 against the Lakers in Game 3 of the 1970 series.

Brunson won the Finals MVP, completing a personal story that started with two Villanova titles in Texas and ended at the Spurs’ own arena.

The Knicks won the series 4-1, and every single win involved a comeback from double figures behind.
