TUGUEGARAO CITY — A green sea turtle nesting site was discovered along the coast of Sabtang, Batanes, during a wildlife inspection and monitoring, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO)-Batanes reported on Sunday.
In a statement, the DENR said the nesting site was not among those identified in earlier monitoring activities conducted in the area, making the discovery significant for local marine wildlife conservation efforts.
To protect the site, PENRO-Batanes chief Victoria Baliuag immediately ordered strict monitoring and regular supervision of the area.

Environment workers also installed a protective net around the nesting ground to prevent predators from disturbing the eggs and improve the chances of successful hatching.
The DENR said the discovery suggests that other undocumented turtle nesting sites may exist within the coastal areas of Sabtang and nearby islands.
The agency added that regular wildlife monitoring and habitat assessments within the Batanes Protected Landscapes and Seascapes will continue to help safeguard marine species and their habitats.
Green sea turtles are among the marine species protected under Philippine environmental laws due to threats from habitat loss, poaching, and human activities. /mcm
