The Governor of Sokoto State, Ahmed Aliyu, has approved the constitution of governing councils for all state-owned tertiary institutions as part of efforts to strengthen governance and enhance the administration of higher education in the state.
The appointments, which take immediate effect, cover major institutions including the College of Nursing and Midwifery, Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Shehu Shagari College of Education, Shehu Shagari University of Education, the College of Agriculture, Wurno, Sultan Abdul Rahman College of Health Technology, Gwadabawa, the College of Legal and Islamic Studies, and the College of Nursing Science, Tambuwal.
According to a statement signed by the Director General of Media and Publicity to the Governor, Abubakar Bawa, Alhaji Yusha’u Kebbe will chair the Governing Council of the College of Nursing and Midwifery, while Prof. Aminu Salihu Mikailu will head the council of Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic.
The Shehu Shagari College of Education Governing Council will be chaired by Ambassador Sahabi Isah Gada, MFR, mni, while Prof. G. V. Ardo has been appointed Chairman of the Governing Council of Shehu Shagari University of Education.
Similarly, Alhaji Yusuf Jega will serve as Chairman of the Governing Council of the College of Agriculture, Wurno, while Alhaji Yusuf Muhammad Goronyo will head the council of Sultan Abdul Rahman College of Health Technology, Gwadabawa.
Justice Ladan Buda Tsamiya has been named Chairman of the Governing Council of the College of Legal and Islamic Studies, while Prof. Hamza Muhammad Maishanu will chair the Governing Council of the College of Nursing Science, Tambuwal.
The councils comprise distinguished academics, government officials, representatives of relevant professional bodies, and principal officers of the respective institutions, who will oversee policy direction and institutional development.
In a related development, Governor Aliyu also approved the appointment of His Royal Highness, the Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Muhammad Hamim Nuhu Sanusi, CFR, as the Pro-Chancellor of Sokoto State University.
The state government said all the appointments take immediate effect, expressing confidence that the newly constituted councils and the university’s Pro-Chancellor will contribute to improving the quality of tertiary education and institutional governance across Sokoto State.
