Portugal’s traditional goat and sheep cheese industry is facing an uncertain future as milk shortages and an ageing farming population threaten production of some of the country’s most iconic cheeses.
Producers across Portugal say demand for traditional cheeses remains strong, but a growing shortage of milk and a younger shepherds willing to continue the profession are putting the sector at risk.
According to a report by SIC Notícias, many farmers fear that traditional cheese-making could disappear unless new generations are encouraged to enter the industry.
Rodrigo, a goat herder in his 60s, has spent more than five decades caring for livestock. Like many shepherds across rural Portugal, he faces a physically demanding routine that requires year-round attention.
The work involves daily grazing, long journeys across mountainous terrain and regular milking schedules that cannot be postponed. As farmers grow older and fewer young people choose agricultural careers, producers warn that the future of Portuguese goat and sheep cheese production is increasingly uncertain.
The problem extends from Trás-os-Montes in northern Portugal to the Alentejo region in the south, affecting areas known for producing Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) cheeses. Despite strong consumer demand, milk production is no longer sufficient to meet orders.
In the Serra da Estrela region, home to Portugal’s famous Serra da Estrela cheese, producers say supply constraints are already limiting their ability to satisfy growing demand.
Industry representatives argue that attracting younger farmers remains the biggest challenge. Many young people are reluctant to pursue careers in agriculture due to the long hours, year-round commitment and demanding nature of livestock farming.
Cheese makers warn that without targeted support for traditional farming and greater promotion of Portugal’s cheese-making heritage, some of the country’s most celebrated sheep and goat cheeses will simply start disappearing.
