Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has called for the accelerated implementation of Indonesia’s national milk self-sufficiency roadmap to reduce reliance on imports and strengthen food security through animal-based protein sources.
He emphasized the importance of developing and executing the roadmap in an integrated manner, covering the entire dairy value chain from upstream production to downstream processing.
“We must work together to complete the milk production roadmap, from upstream to downstream,” he said on Sunday.
Nurofiq noted that Indonesia still relies heavily on imported milk to meet domestic demand, making it essential to boost national production capacity.
According to him, Indonesia currently produces around 1 million tons of milk annually, while domestic demand reaches approximately 4 million tons per year.
“Nearly 80 percent of that demand is met through imports. Therefore, we must take concrete steps to complete the milk production roadmap,” he said.
Given the country's continued dependence on imported dairy products, efforts to strengthen the resilience of the national dairy sector remain a priority.
Increasing domestic milk production is considered crucial not only for meeting the nutritional needs of the population but also for generating greater economic benefits for local dairy farmers.
Nurofiq stressed that advancing the national dairy industry requires close collaboration among the government, the private sector, research institutions, and the broader community.
He added that research plays a key role in developing dairy cattle breeds that are better adapted to Indonesia’s tropical climate, thereby improving productivity and efficiency.
According to him, a science-based approach will help create a more efficient and sustainable livestock system in the long term.
In addition to increasing production, the government is encouraging downstream development of the dairy industry to enhance competitiveness and create greater economic value for businesses.
Nurofiq said that integrating upstream and downstream sectors is essential to building a strong national dairy ecosystem capable of meeting domestic demand.
He expressed optimism that accelerating the milk self-sufficiency roadmap would strengthen national food security and contribute to improving the nutritional quality of the Indonesian population.
