Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Sunday said strikes traded between Hezbollah and Israel won’t impact the U.S.-Iran peace deal, hours ahead of a scheduled electronic signing for the agreement.
“From all I know, we are on track. It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. There’s logistics involved into how these things happen,” Hegseth said during a Sunday appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”
“Ultimately, obviously, we’re attuned to what’s happening with Hezbollah firing rockets into northern Israel, which they need to stop doing, and Iran needs to encourage them to stop doing that in very adamant ways, and Israel was very measured in its response, understanding that a deal is on- is- we’re on the verge of a deal. So, I don’t expect that to disrupt,” he added.
On Sunday, reports emerged of Hezbollah planning to launch strikes on Israel after days of conflict in Lebanon.
Israeli forces have targeted the Iran-backed proxy in Beirut and its southern suburbs for days, leading to uncertainty regarding Tehran’s looming peace deal with Washington.
The current ceasefire in place pertains to Lebanon, and Iran has accused the U.S. of violating the agreement due to repeated Israeli fire on Hezbollah targets.
On Sunday, Trump warned Israel and Iran to maintain composure ahead of finalizing the U.S.-Iran ceasefire extension.
“We are very close to a Deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon, and all sides should stand down,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“There should be no more attacks by Israel anywhere in Lebanon, but there should also be no more attacks by any other party, including Hezbollah, against Israel,” he continued. “This could be the beginning of a long and beautiful peace — Let’s not blow it!”
Hegseth said he expects “more robust talks” surrounding the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel soon, but he noted that “if Iran wants this to hold, they need to- they need to pull back Hezbollah, no doubt.”
His comments come days after Lebanon and Israel signed a ceasefire, agreeing to target Hezbollah jointly.
