Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) on Sunday backed the Trump administration’s decision to urge Anthropic to suspend access to its latest artificial intelligence models in a rare act of agreement with the president.
“Mythos and some of their other models from AI companies are incredibly capable, and some of the capabilities that these models have to access systems, not only federal government systems, but financial systems, is very concerning to us,” Kelly said during an appearance on CBS News’s “Face the Nation, referencing the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 artificial intelligence models.
“So we’ve got to take some time with these tools and do extensive evaluations as to what is the risk to the American people when we release these,” the senator, who regularly criticizes the White House, added. “So I agree with the administration on this.”
Anthropic removed access to the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models on Saturday to align with a directive from the administration restricting foreign nationals from using the new systems due to security concerns.
Earlier this month, President Trump signed an executive order asking AI companies to voluntarily grant government oversight of new systems before making them public, which Anthropic lauded.
Although Anthropic complied with the directive, the company argued the administration’s ask to pull back its new large language models “does not adhere” to the oversight principles outlined in the executive order.
The White House did not explicitly mention any cases that caused for concern with Anthropic’s newest models, but Semafor reported that there was drawback due to a China-linked group accessing Mythos.
Regardless, Kelly, who serves on the Armed Forces Committee, said the Trump administration made the right move by limiting access to these AI models.
“We’ve got to be incredibly careful, and the AI companies, and you know, I think Anthropic is a good example, seems to be willing to work with the federal government on this to make sure that we do not make a mistake and release something that we will later regret,” he told host Margaret Brennan.
