Trump claims victory for peace deal

Nuclear issues still to be discussed
By Doug Dingwall
So where does this agreement leave Iran’s nuclear program?
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi says nuclear issues will be discussed during the 60-day negotiations with the United States.
In his speech given shortly after US forces began attacking Iran, Donald Trump said it had "always been the policy of the United States, in particular my administration, that this terrorist regime can never have a nuclear weapon".

Analysis: So what does this all mean?
By Middle East correspondent Matthew Doran
You'd be forgiven for wondering, or second guessing, whether this is actually a formal end to the war.
It's an important question, given all the handbrake turns this conflict has seen over the past 107 days of conflict.
We are still waiting for some of the key details. But, we do have a sense of a couple of matters.
The fact that, according to the Pakistani prime minister, this deal includes the immediate end to all fighting on all fronts is significant.
It is progress. There's no doubt about that, particularly after the strikes between the US and Iran across the Persian Gulf last week.
That end to hostilities includes Lebanon — something Iran had been demanding during these negotiations, and something Israel had been trying to convince the US to carve out of the talks.
The question will be whether it holds.
Israel was already trying to distance itself from this deal late last week, when Benjamin Netanyahu said his country wasn't a party to the talks hours after Donald Trump said a deal was imminent (something he had said almost 40 times before).
Israel's strike on what it said was a Hezbollah command centre had infuriated Iran and prompted threats that it would retaliate to the attack on its Lebanese proxy.
So, watch this space.
The other thing to keep in mind is that this agreement sets out a further process for negotiations on some of the more prickly issues. It's not an all-inclusive peace deal, calling time on all of Washington and Tehran's grievances.
Over the next 60 days, there'll be further discussion about the future of Iran's nuclear program, the custody of its enriched uranium stockpiles and the specific circumstances when sanctions will lift.
This deal sets the two countries down that path by dealing with the "easier" issues: reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the US naval blockade of Iranian ports and ships.
Again, that will be a gradual process. There's a massive backlog of ships in the Persian Gulf to clear, and there may well be some caution in moving too quickly given fears ships may still be fired upon.
