Former Vice President Mike Pence cast doubt on the possibility of a deal between Iran and the U.S. over the two countries’ war shortly before President Trump announced a deal has been reached on Sunday.
“My concern right now is not with the intentions of the president. Look, I think the president has earned a great deal of deference here by the American people. I just don’t trust the Iranians,” Pence told NewsNation’s Chris Stirewalt on “The Hill Sunday.”
“And I think the president and his team know well that no deal is better than a bad deal. Unless the Iranians forfeit and dismantle their nuclear program, dismantle their missile program, immediately open the straits and stop subsidizing terrorist groups across the region, then I think we would do well to simply let the armed forces of the United States of America finish the job,” he added.
As the war has dragged on, the price of oil and gas has risen and the U.S.’s relationship with some international allies has been strained. The American public has expressed its distaste for the fighting through polls and surveys.
In a Sunday post on the social platform X, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said he was “pleased to announce that the Peace Deal between the United States of America and Islamic Republic of Iran has been REACHED.”
“Both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon,” he added.
Trump said in his own Sunday evening Truth Social post that “the Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete.”
“Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade,” he added.
Earlier Sunday, Trump advised Israel and Iran to “not blow” the finalization of the emerging peace deal during strikes in Lebanon.
“We are very close to a Deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon, and all sides should stand down,” Trump said on Truth Social.
