Two passengers lost their lives, while 14 others sustained injuries after an 18-seater bus crashed near the Conoil filling station in Abaji along the Abuja-Lokoja highway.
A witness said the accident occurred around 7.12am on Sunday and involved a Toyota bus with registration number ATN 287 XB.
According to him, the bus, which was conveying passengers from Gombe to Port Harcourt in Rivers State, suddenly veered off the road after one of its tyres burst and crashed into the opposite lane.
He said one passenger died on the spot, while another died while being transported to a hospital.
Our reporter, who arrived at the scene shortly after the accident, observed injured passengers lying by the roadside as sympathisers made frantic efforts to contact officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), who later evacuated the victims to a hospital.
An FRSC official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also confirmed the accident, saying one victim died at the scene while another died on the way to the hospital.
He attributed the crash to a tyre burst and excessive speed, adding that the injured victims were taken to Abaji General Hospital for treatment.
The official said the corpses had been deposited at the hospital’s morgue.
