The decomposing body of an unidentified woman was discovered in an uncompleted building in the Tudun Fulani New Site area of Bwari, Abuja, on Saturday.
Residents said the body, which had been beheaded, was found after a foul odour emanating from the building attracted the attention of people living nearby.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said neighbours became suspicious after perceiving the offensive smell and traced it to the abandoned structure, where the corpse was found.
Another resident said preliminary observations suggested that the victim might have been restrained before she was killed.
According to him, a blanket believed to have been used to wrap the body and ropes suspected to have been used to tie the victim’s hands and legs were found at the scene.
“We are unable to identify the woman because her head is missing. There was rope around her body, suggesting she might have been tied before she was killed,” the resident said.
He added that the corpse appeared to have been at the location for about two days, noting that it had swollen and was emitting a strong odour.
“There were bruises on her hands and legs, suggesting that she might have struggled before she was killed,” he added.
Another resident, Ibrahim Dogo, said bloodstains were found in one of the rooms of the uncompleted building where the body was discovered.
He also claimed that a blood-soaked blanket was recovered from the room.
“I think her killers lured her into the building, overpowered her and carried out the act there,” he said.
The incident has heightened concerns among residents over insecurity in the area.
“It was terrible. Insecurity is getting out of hand. People are worried about their safety and that of their children,” a resident lamented.
Police officers from the Bwari Divisional Headquarters later evacuated the corpse from the scene.
A police source, who was not authorised to speak officially on the matter, said the division received a distress call from residents on Saturday afternoon and promptly dispatched officers to the area.
The source said the body had been deposited at a morgue in Bwari, while investigations had commenced to ascertain the identity of the victim and the circumstances surrounding her death.
