New York City descended into disorder over the weekend as thousands of Knicks fans flooded the streets following the team’s 94-90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, securing their first championship in 53 years.
Footage features large crowds gathering around Madison Square Garden, with some fans climbing onto buses and damaging vehicles on Saturday. Police were deployed to disperse the crowds and manage the aftermath of the destruction.
Media reports indicated that some individuals targeted school buses, disrupted traffic, and damaged at least one police vehicle windscreen during the celebrations.
Footage also shows a bus was torched on Sunday during celebrations by Knicks fans as crowds scatter from the scene, while others stay behind to film the blaze.
Media reports said several people set fire to items of clothing and threw them into the vehicle, even as others continued dancing on its roof.
No injuries had been reported at the time of publication.
Dozens of people were reportedly arrested following the disorder.
The unrest came just days after another major gathering on Wednesday, when more than 10,000 fans packed the area outside Madison Square Garden following the Knicks' Game 4 comeback victory.
The Knicks wrapped up the series 4-1 with a Game 5 win, securing the franchise's first NBA title in more than half a century.
