The federal government has stepped up its engagement with BRICS countries to boost agricultural production and expand trade, in line with existing bilateral agreements within the bloc.
At the ongoing BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Conference in India, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, called for stronger global cooperation to address food security challenges.
“Nigeria remains Africa’s largest agribusiness hub,” Kyari said, adding that the country is working closely with BRICS members, including Brazil and India, to strengthen food production and agribusiness value chains.
He said the federal government is prioritising the development of Special Agro-Processing Zones across the country to attract investment from Africa and beyond.
Kyari urged BRICS countries to take advantage of Nigeria’s agricultural potential.
“With vast arable land and a gateway market to the whole continent, we offer members and partners a place to invest, trade, and grow together,” he said.
He stressed that Nigeria’s agricultural policies are focused on supporting farmers, especially smallholder farmers, women and youths.
“Everything we have spoken about today begins and ends with the farmer — the productive smallholder farmer, the empowered woman and the confident young farmer. Serve them well, and we will secure the future of food,” he added.
In a separate engagement, Kyari also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening agricultural cooperation with India during a bilateral meeting with his Indian counterpart, Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
The discussions focused on deepening strategic partnerships in agricultural technology, crop production and trade in key agricultural commodities of mutual interest.
