Wellington Water says the short outfall pipe is discharging untreated wastewater on Wellington's South Coast due to heavy rainfall.
The wastewater is being discharged into Tarakena Bay and is likely to be travelling along the coastline.
Wellington Water said signs were in place to alert water users.
It is recommended not to swim, surf or kayak in the area from Ōwhiro Bay to Breaker Bay for 48 hours after the shortfall has stopped discharging.
