Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expressed appreciation to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier for his visit to Jakarta, describing their direct talks as important momentum for both countries to navigate evolving global challenges.
Speaking at a joint press statement with Steinmeier, Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia highly valued the visit, which he said reflected the strong ties fostered by the two nations.
“This visit also serves as crucial momentum as global dynamics are increasingly marked by uncertainty. Strengthening and maintaining the partnership between Indonesia and Germany is certainly a priority,” he remarked at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday.
The Indonesian President also highlighted that Steinmeier’s return to Indonesia came ahead of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which will be commemorated in 2027. The German leader had previously visited Indonesia in 2022.
Steinmeier expressed a similar view saying that his diplomatic engagements in Jakarta carried added significance amid ongoing conflicts and instability in various parts of the world.
“In this situation, partnerships like one maintained by Germany and Indonesia are of great significance,” Steinmeier affirmed.
He noted the robust bilateral partnership was rooted in a shared commitment to a rules-based order.
The German leader also referred to the Jakarta Declaration, signed in July 2012 by then-Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel, which laid the foundation for cooperation in areas such as defense, health, and technology.
“I believe we must further deepen this partnership and expand it into areas related to climate, education, research, and culture,” he remarked.
Steinmeier arrived in Jakarta earlier in the morning and headed straight to the Merdeka Palace for a bilateral meeting with Prabowo.
During the high-level meeting, Indonesia and Germany conveyed their shared commitment to elevating cooperation, including by boosting trade and investment ties and developing skilled workers in the nursing sector.
