The Maltese family behind #SaveLilly has shared an emotional update after donations for their daughter skyrocketed from just €600 on Saturday to more than €10,357 in a matter of days.
The family, who launched the campaign to raise awareness about WWOX Syndrome and support their 11-month-old daughter, said they have been overwhelmed by the response from people across Malta.
“We just want to thank everyone who has donated, shared, messaged us, or helped our daughter’s story reach more people,” the family said.
“The last few days have been overwhelming, but also beautiful in a way we can’t really explain.”
The campaign centres around “Lilly”, a public name chosen to protect the child’s identity while helping raise awareness about WWOX Syndrome, an extremely rare genetic condition believed to affect only around 150 children worldwide.
The disorder causes severe developmental challenges, seizures and other serious neurological complications. At just 11 months old, Lilly requires ongoing therapy, specialised equipment and daily care.
The family explained that the funds raised will go towards essential equipment and support services, including therapy and specialised care needs.
They also revealed that if donations exceed what is required for Lilly’s direct care, the remaining funds will be used to support the wider fight against WWOX Syndrome.
“The fund will help us with the special equipment and care our daughter needs, and if we raise more than what is needed for her direct care, we will use it to support the WWOX cause and the work being done to move treatment research forward.”
They highlighted the ongoing efforts of the WWOX Foundation, researchers and families around the world who are working towards developing treatments for the condition.
“The WWOX Foundation, researchers, and families are already fighting so hard. We are just trying to help bring more people behind that fight.”
The family ended their message with a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign so far and urged people to continue spreading awareness.
“Thank you for helping us carry this. Please keep sharing if you can. It really does help.”
In just a few days, Malta has helped transform #SaveLilly from a small fundraiser into a nationwide awareness campaign, and the family hopes the momentum will continue to grow.
