PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur — Agusan del Sur’s Naliyagan Festival 2026 turned solemn on its third night as 1st District Rep. Alfelito Bascug paid tribute to late rising basketball star Rene Clert Baterbonia.
Spectators fell silent as Bascug shed tears while speaking about Baterbonia, turning the festive gathering into a reflection on loss, sacrifice, and the enduring legacy of a young athlete who inspired many.

After honoring Baterbonia as a symbol of discipline, sacrifice, and youthful inspiration, Bascug shifted his focus during his State of the District Address to what he described as a sustained effort to turn public service into concrete reforms in health, education, infrastructure, and social protection.

He reported that in the opening year of the 20th Congress, he had filed 51 principally authored bills covering health, education, agriculture, labor welfare, social protection, economic development, and good governance—measures he said were designed to reflect the needs of Agsurnons at the national level despite political noise and institutional challenges.
Beyond legislation, he emphasized that development must be visible on the ground, citing ongoing infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, health facilities, evacuation centers, and multipurpose buildings across communities in the district.
Bascug lauded the successful hosting of the 66th Palarong Pambansa 2026, branded as “Palaro tu AgSur,” which brought thousands of athletes, coaches, and officials from across the country to Agusan del Sur.
He said the achievement was not solely the result of government leadership but also of ordinary citizens who volunteered, supported operations, and helped ensure the success of the national sporting event. /mcm
