President Trump is pressing for an extension of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to include the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act.
“A few Dumocrats are against FISA, with or without Bill Pulte going to DNI, as Acting. What kind of a deal is that. Besides, I’m against FISA if it doesn’t come with The Save America Act (Full version!) firmly attached to it. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump said in a Truth Social post Sunday afternoon, referencing Democratic opposition to reauthorizing the nation’s warrantless spy powers due to objections to Pulte being tapped to head the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
Last week, both the House and Senate failed to pass bills to extend Section 702 of FISA through July 2 amid Democrats’ anger over Pulte being tapped to head the intelligence community. Both chambers then left Washington, allowing the spy powers to lapse at midnight.
Section 702 of FISA lets the government compel communications companies to turn over the records of foreign targets without a warrant.
Trump early Monday reupped his push for a Section 702 extension to include the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo ID to cast a ballot, saying in another Truth Social post that “the Dumocrats want FISA because that’s what they used to go after me for three years during my First Term!”
“I’m against FISA if it doesn’t come with The Save America Act (Full version!) firmly attached to it,” he added.
Trump last week called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) to “immediately fire” Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough to make a path for Senate Republicans to pass the SAVE America Act.
