A new four-star hotel offering guests the chance to sleep inside a medieval castle has officially opened in the Alto Alentejo.
Following a soft opening period, the Marvão Hotel Museu has entered full operation, becoming “Portugal’s first hotel museum located within a castle”, and one of the region’s most distinctive tourism projects.
Situated inside the walled village of Marvão, the hotel occupies the historic Edifício da Janela Manuelina on Rua do Castelo, a landmark building that had stood in ruins for more than two decades before undergoing extensive restoration.
Officially inaugurated in March 2026, the project combines accommodation, museology, gastronomy and accessibility in a bid to offer visitors a more immersive experience of one of Portugal’s best-preserved hilltop villages.
Rather than functioning solely as a hotel, the Marvão Hotel Museu aims to connect guests with the history and identity of the surrounding territory.
Original architectural features, including the building’s Manueline window, stonework and historical references linked to Marvão’s heritage, have been carefully preserved. The renovation incorporated traditional regional materials such as granite, chestnut wood and lime mortar while introducing contemporary comforts.
One of the project’s defining features is its focus on accessibility. The hotel has been certified as fully accessible for guests with reduced mobility, a rare achievement within the narrow streets and historic buildings of a fortified medieval village.
To make access easier, the hotel offers an electric shuttle service between designated parking areas and the property, reducing traffic within the historic centre while improving convenience for visitors.
The boutique hotel features just 12 rooms across five categories, including accessible rooms, family accommodation and mountain-view options. Each room incorporates locally inspired details, from granite stone basins to embroidery using Marvão chestnut bark and blankets made from Alentejo sheep’s wool.
At the heart of the concept is the “Da Pedra à Pólvora” (“From Stone to Gunpowder”) museum, which showcases the private collection of José Ribeiro Sudon and traces the evolution of weapons, artefacts and defensive systems throughout history.
Open to both guests and day visitors, the museum includes information in Portuguese and English, as well as Braille texts, simplified language and tactile images designed to improve accessibility.
The hotel’s Restaurante Guarita highlights local producers and traditional Alentejo flavours, with dishes featuring lamb, Alentejo pork and seasonal regional ingredients.
Guests will also be able to book a range of experiences through the upcoming Marvão Experience programme, including guided walks in the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, visits to high-altitude wineries, activities at the Apartadura reservoir, RailBike tours and jeep excursions.
As travellers increasingly seek authentic and experience-led accommodation, Marvão Hotel Museu offers a rare opportunity to stay within a castle while discovering the history, culture and landscapes of the Alto Alentejo.
