Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia welcomed the reported peace agreement reached between the United States and Iran, while expressing urgent hope that the deal will spark immediate regional de-escalation and a lasting return to stability.
“This is a positive development towards a peaceful settlement of the conflict and advancing peace, security and stability in the region,” the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Monday.
The ministry further commended the efforts of all involved parties and mediators that have constructively contributed to facilitating dialogue and encouraging a peaceful resolution of long-standing differences.
“Indonesia calls on all parties to continue exercising restraint, uphold their commitments and engage constructively in dialogue in order to sustain the momentum towards de-escalation,” it continued.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry emphasized that Indonesia continues to encourage the immediate implementation of the peace agreement and stands ready to support all efforts aimed at advancing regional peace, security and stability in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.
US President Donald Trump announced earlier that a comprehensive deal with Iran had been finalized, authorizing the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz and the immediate lifting of the US naval blockade.
The Iranian government swiftly confirmed the breakthrough. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi announced in a live television broadcast that the official signing of the memorandum of understanding will take place in Switzerland on Friday, June 19.
Gharibabadi further confirmed that the terms of the US-Iran peace deal included a total cessation of military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon, effective as of Monday night.
