As President Trump travels to France for the Group of Seven (G7) summit, the globe is parsing the preliminary deal between the U.S. and Iran, announced Sunday. It would open the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, after it is signed in Geneva, but it pushes thornier issues, like Iran’s nuclear capabilities, into 60 days of negotiations.
While Trump is in France for the G7, he’ll meet one-on-one with several world leaders, with one notable exception: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump landed Monday afternoon local time in Geneva, near the summit site Evian-les-Bains. The president departed for France overnight after a UFC spectacle on the White House lawn for his 80th birthday. Read takeaways from that event.
In Washington, the battle over Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) rages on. Trump added pressure to finding a deal, insisting that a FISA extension include the SAVE Act.
Tied to the FISA renewal is a change in leadership at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. On Wednesday, the Senate Intelligence Committee will hold a set of confirmation hearings for Trump’s permanent Director of National Intelligence pick, Jay Clayton.
Meanwhile, Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) call for Republicans to act on Social Security reform in 2027 is getting pushback from Senate Republicans who warn it’s a bad political message heading into November.
