President Trump said in a new interview he was enraged at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for striking Lebanon as the U.S. was seeking to wrap up negotiations with Iran over the weekend.
“Why did Bibi have to do a f‑‑‑ing attack?” Trump told Axios in a phone interview on Sunday. “I was so p‑‑‑ed off. I let him know. He has no f‑‑‑ing judgment. I let him know that.”
The comments mark some of Trump’s most pointed criticism toward Netanyahu as tensions between the two leaders have simmered in recent weeks over the prime minister’s insistence on targeting Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon amid peace talks between Washington and Tehran.
Trump’s criticism came after Israel’s military said it conducted an airstrike in a suburb of Beirut on Sunday as the president said a deal with Iran would be signed on Sunday.
The Israeli military said the strike was in response to the militant group firing three projectiles into northern Israel.
Trump responded to the strikes in a Truth Social post, warning Israel not to “blow it.”
“We are very close to a Deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon, and all sides should stand down,” Trump wrote.
“There should be no more attacks by Israel anywhere in Lebanon, but there should also be no more attacks by any other party, including Hezbollah, against Israel,” he continued. “This could be the beginning of a long and beautiful peace — Let’s not blow it!”
The Trump administration announced Sunday that a preliminary deal with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz had been reached.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has mediated talks between Washington and Tehran, wrote Sunday on the social platform X that an official signing ceremony will take place Friday in Switzerland. Trump has previously said Vice President Vance could represent the U.S. in Switzerland.
Netanyahu has not publicly responded to news of the deal.
