Nordio under fire over 'Mussolini signed the criminal code' comment

Justice minister was criticising book fair's anti-fascism declaration

Justice Minister Carlo Nordio has

come under fire for referring to the fact that the criminal code

still in use in Italy was drafted during the Fascist period in

order to criticise a Rome book fair, Più Libri Più Liberi, for

asking publishers wanting to take part to sign an anti-fascism

declaration.

"Perhaps the organizers don't know that the most important book

for our justice system—namely, the Criminal Code—bears

Mussolini's signature,' Nordio said.

He argued that it is a "paradox" that people who do not want to

change this code are demanding "proof of anti-fascism".

Dario Parrini, a Senator for the opposition, centre-left

Democratic Party (PD), blasted the comments and said: "Nordio is

a champion of absurd statements".

Angelo Bonelli of the Green-Left Alliance (AVS) said the remarks

were a "wink at Vannacci's neo-fascists", referring to the new

far-right party set up by former general Roberto Vannacci.
