Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler is no longer in a coma “but remains very unwell and in intensive care in hospital in Portugal”, her family and management team have confirmed.
In an update shared on the singer’s official channels, representatives said the singer’s condition was improving, although her recovery was expected to be slow.
“Bonnie is no longer in a coma but remains very unwell and in intensive care in hospital in Portugal,” the statement said. “Although her condition is improving, it is a slow process. Her doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery, but it is going to take time.”
As a result, all of Tyler’s scheduled performances until the end of August have been cancelled or postponed until next year where possible. Her team said they remain hopeful that planned autumn shows will still go ahead.
“We apologise to all of Bonnie’s fans and to our promoter partners for the disappointment that this will cause but trust that you will understand and bear with us in these difficult circumstances,” the statement added.
The 75-year-old singer has been receiving treatment in the Algarve since early May. She was admitted to Faro Hospital on May 6 for emergency intestinal surgery, although her representatives have not disclosed specific details about her condition. Portuguese media reports suggested she underwent urgent surgery for a ruptured appendix.
As The Resident reported earlier this month, the singer celebrated her 75th birthday on June 8 while still in hospital, with fans across the world marking the occasion by sharing messages, memories and tributes on social media.
Her team said Tyler is aware of the “huge outpouring of love and support” she has received from fans around the world and is “very grateful” for their good wishes.
Tyler, known for her distinctive raspy voice, rose to international fame in the late 1970s and 1980s with hits including Total Eclipse of the Heart, Holding Out for a Hero and It’s a Heartache. Over a career spanning more than five decades, she has sold millions of records worldwide and remains one of the UK’s most recognisable musical artists.
Her family has renewed its request for privacy and said further updates will be issued when there are significant developments in her recovery.
