Aldon Smith’s death has not only shocked the nation but has left a lingering sadness and a gaping hole of wasted potential.The former San Francisco 49ers star died at 36 on June 13, the team announced in a statement on X.

Smith had been out of the NFL since 2020, but his name still carried the weight of what he once was, one of the most destructive young pass rushers football had seen in years.

Smith’s cause and manner of death remain uncertain, according to Santa Clara County Chief Medical Examiner Michelle Jorden, who confirmed his death in a statement to the San Francisco Chronicle.“The Office of the Medical Examiner is confirming the death of 36-year-old Aldon Jacarus Ramon Smith, who died today June 13, 2026,” Jorden said.

“The Medical Examiner is investigating his death, and no further information is available at this time. The cause and manner of death are pending.”That is the official answer as of June 15. Sadly, the actual cause of the untimely demise of such a young, talented player has remained a mystery still.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Smith was found unresponsive Saturday morning by his friend, Amir Shirazi. Earlier that day, Shirazi and Smith had been delivering pizzas to a charity that serves homeless people.

After the delivery, the two returned to Shirazi’s home. Shirazi said he stepped inside briefly. When he came back out, he found Smith slumped over and unresponsive in the truck.“He was perfectly fine an hour before,” Shirazi told the Chronicle. “I came out and he was basically dead in my front seat. I’m just in shock.”Smith was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose less than an hour later. Shirazi told the Chronicle he believes Smith’s death may have been due to natural causes, but he did not know for certain.Shirazi also said Smith had been struggling financially after his football career and had been staying with friends while waiting for his NFL pension. Per the NFL, players can begin receiving pension payments at 55. Smith was 36.Despite Smith’s history of substance abuse, Shirazi said he did not see Smith use drugs on the day he died. He said Smith only smoked marijuana occasionally through the years.“He was a very sweet, caring, loving giant,” Shirazi said.

“That if you really knew him, you’d know who he truly is.”

Smith’s final day showed the quiet gap between his NFL stardom and his life after football

The 49ers selected Smith with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft out of Missouri. His rise was immediate. He recorded 14 sacks as a rookie, then followed with 19.5 sacks in 2012.The 49ers remembered that version of him in their statement.“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith,” the team said. “Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen.

Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon.

”Smith finished his NFL career with 52.5 sacks, 228 total tackles, 56 tackles for loss, 103 quarterback hits, five forced fumbles, and one interception across 75 regular-season games.He played for the 49ers from 2011 to 2014, the Oakland Raiders in 2015, and the Dallas Cowboys in 2020.

Substance abuse issues and suspensions kept him out of the league from 2016 to 2019, cutting into a career that once looked built for Canton.Smith was born Sept. 25, 1989. He died before his 37th birthday.The numbers tell simply a fragment of the man he was. The final day tells a tale to go down in the books. Smith spent some of his last hours helping deliver food to people who needed it, and the twist of fate was so cruel that the same day, he left the world suddenly before anyone around him could understand what had happened.For now, Aldon Smith’s cause of death remains a mystery.
