Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) called on the Trump administration Monday to brief Congress immediately on the “understanding” with Iran that President Trump says would reopen the Strait of Hormuz but leaves the future of Iran’s nuclear program for later talks.
“The American people deserve details and full transparency – what exactly is in this ‘understanding’? Will servicemembers remain in harm’s way?” Schumer said in a statement.
“Trump must release the details publicly, brief Congress immediately, and end this war for good,” Schumer said.
Schumer argued that Americans have been told “dozens of times” that the war is over and dozens of times “have been left disappointed.”
“What have we actually gained here from Trump’s war?” he asked, adding that the regime still in control of Iran “is more radical than the previous one.”
“The Strait of Hormuz is under greater Iranian control now than before the war began,” he said.
Trump has claimed that under the peace framework with Iran the critical Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 percent of the globe’s oil supply travels, would be “permanently toll free.”
Iran’s Fars News Agency, however, reported that Iran has insisted on adding a “maritime services” fee to the deal that would generate money for its coffers.
The peace agreement also sets aside the difficult discussions of easing sanctions on Iran and curbing Iran’s nuclear program for a later date.
U.S. and Iranian officials will attend a ceremonial signing of the agreement Friday in Geneva, which would then set the stage for a 60-day discussion on sanctions and Iran’s nuclear program.
One major issue left unaddressed is the occupation of territory in Lebanon by Israeli forces.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Monday that Israeli troops would remain in south Lebanon and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hasn’t yet commented on the deal.
Vice President Vance confirmed Monday in an interview with CBS News that Iran could have access to $300 billion for reconstruction as part of the deal.
“That’s the sort of thing they could have access to, funded by the Gulf coast coalition, so long as they honor their end of the obligation,” he told CBS.
