Lin-Manuel Miranda has penned a new song for the live-action remake of Disney’s Moana. The new song is titled “Along the Way” and features both Moana actresses in the vocals.
Auli‘i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated films Moana (2016) and Moana 2 (2024), Catherine Laga’aia, who plays Moana in the upcoming film, and Dwayne Johnson perform the new song for the live-action film.
In a featurette for the making of “Along the Way,” director Thomas Kail said that they “really wanted to do something that could be distinct to this film” and came up with the idea of having both Moanas sing together.
Laga’aia noted that the song is “the perfect symbolism for this moving,” adding, “Dwayne and Auli’i each sing about finding me along the way and our journeys colliding.”
“What’s really wonderful is that Auli’i is a producer on this film,” Miranda added. “So we thought, ‘What if there’s a musical conversation between Auli’i’s Moana and [Catherine’s] Moana?’ That became the idea for the song.”
Johnson noted that the song was special because “it’s our OG Moana and your live-action Moana coming together, and then it’s your boy Maui coming in.”
Moana opens in theaters July 10. The cast of the film also includes John Tui as Chief Tui (Moana’s father), Frankie Adams as Sina (Moana’s mother), Rena Owen as Gramma Tala (Moana’s grandmother and Tui’s mother), and Jemaine Clement as Tamatoa (the treasure-hoarding coconut crab).
