BAGUIO CITY — Mayor Benjamin Magalong has ordered stricter inspections and sanctions against food establishments following a viral video that appeared to show a rat inside a bowl of sinigang served at a local buffet restaurant.
The city government has launched an investigation into the incident and apologized to affected customers. Magalong said the restaurant would face penalties once the probe is completed.
“We really need to sanction that restaurant. After the investigation, there will be charges, and the owner of that establishment will face corresponding penalties,” he said.

Magalong also dismissed reports that the establishment in Jungletown had resumed operations after a brief cleanup, stressing that businesses ordered closed for health violations must undergo reinspection and secure clearance before reopening.
“They cannot just reopen like that. It needs to be inspected again,” he said.
The incident has prompted the city government to intensify inspections of food establishments across Baguio, including targeted checks in Jungletown and other areas, in addition to regular monitoring.
Magalong likewise raised concerns over recurring sanitation issues in parts of the city, including Suello Village, and noted a resurgence of rodents at the Baguio City Public Market, which he attributed to lapses in compliance among some vendors.
He emphasized that adherence to sanitation standards—including proper pest control measures and clean restroom facilities—remains mandatory as the city strengthens enforcement to safeguard public health./coa
