Latest news in India today: In a sweeping move to ensure the integrity of the upcoming medical entrance exams, the Indian government has temporarily restricted access to the messaging platform Telegram across the country until June 22, 2026.
Temporary Ban: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) invoked Section 69A of the IT Act to block the app, targeting the window of the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination scheduled for June 21.

The Reason: The National Testing Agency (NTA) requested the ban as a “measure of last resort” to shut down organized cheating rackets. Fraudulent channels (like “PAPER LEAKED NEET”) have been openly demanding lakhs of rupees from candidates in exchange for fake leaked question papers.
Message Editing Disabled: In a unique secondary measure, Telegram’s message-editing feature has been disabled in India until June 30, 2026. Scammers were previously exploiting this feature by retroactively editing old messages with real question papers after exams concluded, retaining the old timestamps to fabricate fake evidence of paper leaks.
Ongoing Arrests: The ban follows extensive inter-agency operations by the Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and state police, including the recent arrest of an inter-state cyber-fraud gang in Gujarat that routed approximately ₹1.5 crore through fake accounts.
What this means for students:
The NTA has firmly reiterated that no official paper has been leaked and all such offers are scams. The NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination will proceed securely as scheduled on June 21. The agency has apologized to the general public for the inconvenience caused by the temporary Telegram outage but emphasized it is necessary to protect the futures of honest candidates.
