Operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, in collaboration with officials of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) Development Control Department, on Monday demolished and set ablaze suspected kidnappers’ hideouts in Zhiko village, Paze, Bwari Area Council of the FCT.
Anti-kidnapping operatives, led by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, last week raided a kidnappers’ hideout in the area, where two suspected kidnappers were killed and five abducted victims, including a pastor, were rescued.
Addressing journalists during the demolition exercise, CP Sanusi said the operation followed the arrest of several suspects during last week’s raid.
According to him, the suspects confessed that the structures served as their hideouts and were used by members of the gang to prepare meals and keep captives.
“The suspects led us to the location and identified the houses they used as their base. Based on their confessions and the evidence gathered, we considered it necessary to bring down the structures. That is why I came here with officials of Development Control and my men to carry out the demolition,” he said.
The commissioner explained that the hideouts, located beneath rocky hills, lie within a border area linking the FCT with parts of Kaduna and Niger states, where security operatives recently conducted clearance operations against criminal elements.
Sanusi warned residents, particularly those in rural communities, against harbouring kidnappers, bandits and other criminal elements, stressing that the command would continue to intensify efforts to rid the territory of crime.
He vowed that any structure found to be used for harbouring kidnappers or holding victims captive anywhere in the FCT would be demolished.
“We will not relent in our efforts to stamp out all forms of criminality in the FCT. Any building discovered to be serving as a hideout for kidnappers or a place where victims are held will be pulled down,” he said.
