Olhão is marking the 200th anniversary of its elevation to municipality status with a year-long programme of concerts, exhibitions and cultural events designed to celebrate its history while bringing culture to all four parishes.
Speaking to national news agency Lusa, Olhão mayor Ricardo Calé said the bicentenary celebrations reflect a commitment to decentralising cultural activities and ensuring they reach communities across the municipality rather than being concentrated in the city centre.
“We are celebrating this milestone with a very diverse and decentralised cultural programme,” he said. “Cultural moments also need to be decentralised.”
One of the highlights of the programme will be 200 Anos em Movimento (200 Years in Motion), a community videomapping spectacle scheduled for August 28 in Largo Sebastião Martins Mestre.
The production will combine projections, professional actors and members of the local community to tell the story of Olhão’s two centuries as a municipality through videomapping – an audiovisual technique that transforms irregular physical surfaces (like buildings or statues) into dynamic display screens.
Music will also play a central role in the celebrations, with churches in all four parishes hosting performances by the Algarve Orchestra and the Algarve Jazz Orchestra.
Visitors can already explore the exhibition Dois Séculos a Fazer um Lugar (Two Centuries Creating a Place), currently on display in the foyer of the Maria Barroso Municipal Auditorium until November.
The exhibition traces key moments in Olhão’s history through historical documents and photographs, offering a visual journey through the municipality’s development over the past 200 years.
The wider programme includes a concert by Portuguese singer Buba Espinho accompanied by the Choir and Ensemble of the Olhão Music Conservatory, as well as music and discussion cycles, thematic exhibitions and educational activities.
The celebrations will culminate with the Biennial of Civic Participation and Culture, during which the municipality will present its Culture and Creativity Strategy for 2027-2030.
Calé says he has begun reshaping the municipality’s approach to cultural investment, arguing that funding should be spread more evenly throughout the year rather than being concentrated primarily on major events.
“The umbrella of culture and events is enormous,” he said, suggesting that a greater share of cultural funding should be directed towards long-term projects with educational value and audience development.
While stressing the importance of Olhão’s traditional festivities, the mayor said the municipality aims to diversify its cultural offer and attract different audiences.
That strategy is reflected in the launch of the first edition of the Olhão South Jazz festival, which will take place on July 24 and 25 and feature performances by Júlio Resende, Áurea, the Algarve Jazz Orchestra and Sara Badalo.
“We cannot always offer the same type of cultural programme,” Calé said. “With this jazz festival, we are showing that we are diversifying access to culture at different moments.”
At the same time, the municipality has confirmed the continuation of major annual events including New Year’s Eve celebrations, the city’s summer festivities and the renowned Festival do Marisco (Seafood Festival).
This year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations are expected to receive additional investment as the municipality seeks to increase the event’s scale and profile.
The return of the Olhão Fair, which has not been held for several years, is also planned for September, alongside the revival of the city’s traditional Santos Populares (Popular Marches).
On Olhão Municipal Day, celebrated on Tuesday, June 16, the municipality formalised the transfer of responsibilities to parish councils in the areas of culture, public works and sport.
“We believe decentralisation is important, because we want to show more and more than proximity makes a difference. If we want this to happen on a national level, we also have to lead by example at a local level,” the mayor said.
