The Sokoto State Government has declared Tuesday, 16th June 2026, which corresponds to 1st Muharram 1448 AH, a public holiday.
The holiday is to enable Muslims in the state to celebrate the commencement of the New Islamic Year, 1448 AH.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu, in a message to the people of the state, called on them to use the occasion of the New Islamic Year to pray fervently for an end to the insecurity bedevilling some parts of the state and the country at large.
He described insecurity as a serious challenge hindering Nigeria’s development and stressed the need for all stakeholders to work together to overcome it.
“The Federal and State Governments are doing their best through sustained support to security agencies in their fight against banditry and other forms of criminality in the state,” the Governor said.
“We need to understand that securing our country is a collective responsibility in which every patriotic citizen must play a role.”
Governor Ahmed Aliyu further reiterated his administration’s commitment to continuing support for security agencies in every possible way to curb banditry and other criminal activities.
On the significance of the New Islamic Year, the Governor called on Muslims to use the occasion for sober reflection and self-assessment, with a view to identifying areas in which they have performed well and those requiring improvement.
He also emphasized the need for Muslims to repent of their sins and seek Allah’s forgiveness, noting that Allah the Almighty is Most Forgiving and Most Merciful.
The Governor assured the people of the state of his administration’s continued commitment to promoting Islamic propagation and supporting religious activities across the state.
He wished all Muslims a peaceful, prosperous, and rewarding New Islamic Year, 1448 AH.
