MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Tuesday defended Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., saying he was only performing his duty after China imposed sanctions on him and his family.
In an unprecedented move against a Cabinet member since diplomatic ties were established 51 years ago, Beijing announced on June 11 that it was barring Teodoro and his family from entering mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao over unspecified, allegedly “irresponsible” remarks by the defense chief.
“China has its own laws, it has its own policies, and the same is true for the Philippines,” Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said in Filipino at a briefing in Kazan, Russia.

“Secretary Gibo, as defense secretary, is simply carrying out his duties in accordance with his mandate, the law, the Constitution, and the policies of the administration,” she added.

“While the imposition of sanctions is China’s sovereign prerogative, the Philippines views it as an unfriendly act that further complicates bilateral relations,” it said.
It added that such measures “do not contribute to building mutual trust, managing differences responsibly, or creating the conditions necessary for constructive engagement between our two countries.”

Teodoro shrugged off China’s sanctions and said he would continue carrying out his duties.
