Dompu (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Housing and Settlements Fahri Hamzah emphasized the importance of upgrading slum areas, including those in coastal regions, to improve environmental quality and support sustainable development across Indonesia.
He made the statement after inaugurating a revitalized slum settlement in the Dorokarama II area in Soro Village, Dompu District, West Nusa Tenggara, on Monday, June 15.
“This development serves as proof that our coastal regions have begun to rise up and are becoming ready to play an important role in realizing the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision,” Hamzah remarked, as quoted from a statement cited on Tuesday.
He stressed that the government’s slum rehabilitation initiative extends beyond physical development, serving as a vital instrument to encourage social change and elevate the quality of life for communities.
The successful upgrade of Dorokarama II, he continued, demonstrates that communities living in slum areas can make significant progress when supported by appropriate policies and programs.
“There are many talented people from remote villages capable of designing and transforming slums into better areas,” Hamzah stated.
However, the deputy minister stressed that translating the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision into reality requires more than infrastructure, highlighting the need to enhance human resource quality.
In this context, he noted that intensified physical construction should proceed side by side with improved nutritional, health, and educational services.
Dompu District Head Bambang Firdaus, for his part, conveyed gratitude to the central government for bringing the slum revitalization initiative to Soro Village.
He noted that the program had transformed the local community by providing residents with a healthier, safer, and more decent living environment.
The Dorokarama II area occupies 8.7 hectares of land, with revitalization works having covered 2.28 hectares. The Dompu government hoped that the entire area could eventually be upgraded.
