Malta has welcomed the new agreement reached between the United States and Iran, describing it as a chance to replace escalating conflict with greater peace across the Middle East.
Speaking during the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg, Foreign and European Affairs Minister Chris Fearne praised the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two countries, which is aimed at easing regional tensions and is expected to lead to the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
“Malta recognises that this is now an opportunity to achieve, instead of an escalation of wars, an escalation of peace across the entire Middle East,” Fearne told his European counterparts.
The minister also called for stronger European Union involvement in efforts to build a future Palestinian state, while stressing the importance of supporting ongoing reforms within the Palestinian Authority.
The meeting in Luxembourg saw EU foreign ministers discuss a range of international issues, including Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, developments in the Middle East and relations between the European Union and China.
On Ukraine, Malta joined other EU member states in condemning the latest Russian attacks on Kyiv and urged greater attention to the so-called “shadow fleet” operating in the Mediterranean, warning of the potential risks it poses to maritime safety and security.
Fearne argued that any attempt to impose a full maritime ban on such vessels would require broader international support, particularly from G7 countries, to be effective.
On the sidelines of the council, Fearne also participated in the EU-Egypt Association Council and held bilateral meetings with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, Cristina Gerasimov.
As tensions continue to shape global politics, Malta’s message in Luxembourg was clear: diplomacy and dialogue remain the preferred path forward.
