
MANILA, Philippines—The Department of Education (DepEd) is working to build over 2,000 classrooms with the help of local government units.
An investment worth P9.3B is being poured into this project.
DepEd says the procurement for this school infrastructure initiative has already started.

These partnerships are expected to produce 2,632 classrooms across more than 600 school sites nationwide.

“This collaboration with local government units will greatly help accelerate the construction of facilities,” Education Secretary Sonny Angara said in a statement.
He added that DepEd “cannot solve the classroom shortage on its own.”
“LGU support is crucial to ensure that our students have safe and comfortable schools,” he said.
“We established these guidelines not to add burden or delay the process, but to speed up fund releases while ensuring that our projects are clean, high-quality and free from irregularities,” he added.

DepEd will exercise full institutional oversight through the newly created Joint Project Implementation and Construction Committee.
Financing for the project will be released in three tranches.

LGUs will retain the option to engage contractors through competitive bidding or deploy their own engineers for project implementation, provided national standards are met.
The program complements other major infrastructure efforts, including DepEd’s P36.2-billion classroom construction pipeline and the Public-Private Partnership School Infrastructure Program.
