California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D) office on Monday requested any records relevant to the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) probe into him and his wife.
In a letter to the office of acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, David Sapp, Newsom’s legal affairs secretary, requested access to “all documents and records including but not limited to memoranda, emails, text messages, and Signal messages” pertaining to the investigation.
Newsom, a frequent critic of President Trump, said earlier Monday the DOJ was investigating him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. He said federal agents have knocked on the doors of family friends and former employees in search of a crime.
“Today, my wife & I joined Donald Trump’s hit list,” Newsom wrote on social platform X. “He has directed his Department of Justice to investigate us. They have not found a crime – they are simply trying to find one.
“He isn’t coming after me because of mean tweets, but because I am considering running for President.”
In his letter to Blanche’s office, Sapp specifically requested messages from, to or copying “any member of the executive leadership” of the DOJ, including but not limited to Blanche, former Attorney General Pam Bondi and former acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, that reference Newsom’s full name, his last name or his wife’s name between Jan. 20, 2025, and the present.
The Hill has reached out to the DOJ for comment.
Sapp asked that Blanche’s office make a determination on his request by July 6 and “promptly provide the requested information in electronic format” to Newsom’s administration.
“My office is demanding the Trump Administration release any and all records on the Trump DOJ’s politically motivated, baseless fishing expedition,” Newsom wrote on X. “The American people deserve to know who ordered this abuse of power and how far it goes.”
CalMatters reported Monday that there have been at least two criminal probes into Newsom ongoing for more than a year in the Eastern District of California. The investigations stemmed from whistleblowers regarding Siebel Newsom’s taxes and a separate probe into Dana Williamson, the governor’s former chief of staff.
Williamson pleaded guilty last May in a corruption case that the DOJ first opened during the Biden administration.
But on Monday, Newsom said that he and his wife “have nothing to hide.”
He added, “Donald Trump picked the wrong target.”
