The Hijrah Islamic Organisation of Nigeria (HIO) has urged the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering mechanisms and deepen community participation in security matters.
The organisation said the persistent wave of kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery and communal conflicts continues to threaten lives and undermine socio-economic activities across the country.
Speaking in Ilorin during an event marking the commencement of the 1448 Hijrah calendar, the group’s Vice Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Bio Koto, described insecurity as one of Nigeria’s most pressing national concerns.
He stressed that a collective approach is required to reverse the trend.
According to him, security agencies cannot win the fight against crime without timely intelligence from citizens and active collaboration from local communities.
“Rising cases of kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery and communal clashes continue to threaten lives and livelihoods. Islam places a high premium on the sanctity of human life,” Koto said.
While acknowledging ongoing efforts by security agencies and governments at different levels to curb criminal activities, he argued that more support should be provided for security personnel to enhance their effectiveness.
Koto specifically called for improved welfare packages for security operatives, saying better remuneration and working conditions would boost morale and strengthen the fight against insecurity.
He also advocated expanded youth empowerment initiatives and noted that creating opportunities for young people would help reduce vulnerability to crime and other social vices.
The Islamic leader also expressed worry over the country’s economic situation.
Soaring food prices, inflation, unemployment and declining purchasing power, he noted, are major challenges confronting millions of Nigerians.
He urged authorities to urgently implement people-oriented policies capable of easing the burden on citizens and stimulating economic recovery.
On 2027 general elections, Koto reminded political actors that leadership is a sacred responsibility that must be exercised with honesty and accountability.
“We urge political leaders and aspiring office holders to fear Allah in their dealings, be truthful in their promises, avoid unrealistic campaign pledges, prioritise public interest over personal gain, and promote transparency, accountability and integrity,” he said.
He maintained that good governance, economic justice and improved security remain critical to Nigeria’s stability and sustainable development.
Daily Trust reports that the event attracted religious leaders, government officials, traditional rulers and other dignitaries from across the state.
It also featured a colourful march past by students from selected schools.
In recognition of the occasion, the Kwara State Government declared Tuesday a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the new Hijrah year.
The government urged Muslims and other residents to use the period to pray for peace, unity and continued development of the state and the country.
