The Gastronomic Confraternity of the Sardine of Portimão has helped establish the first sardine confraternity outside Portugal, taking part in the official foundation and enthronement ceremony of the newly created Sardine Confraternity of Luxembourg.
The ceremony took place on June 13 in Junglinster, Luxembourg, and was attended by local culture councillor Tom Weber, marking what organisers described as a significant milestone for the promotion of Portuguese gastronomy abroad and the international recognition of the sardine as a symbol of Portugal’s maritime heritage.
The Portimão-based confraternity acted as the “godmother” organisation for the project, supporting the founders of the new institution throughout its creation and providing guidance from the initial planning stages through to its official launch, it says in a statement to the press.
According to the organisation, the establishment of the Sardine Confraternity of Luxembourg represents a “historic mark” for Portugal’s confraternity movement and for the international promotion of Portuguese gastronomic traditions.
The initiative also reinforces cultural links between Portugal and Luxembourg’s sizeable Portuguese community, one of the largest Portuguese populations living abroad, the Portimão group says.
During the ceremony, the seven founding members of the new confraternity were formally enthroned, the organisation was officially constituted and its inaugural Book of Enthronements was opened, creating a permanent record of future members and activities.
The president of the Gastronomic Confraternity of the Sardine of Portimão described the occasion as a landmark moment.
“The creation of the first Sardine Confraternity abroad demonstrates the vitality of our traditions and the ability of gastronomy to unite communities, preserve identities and build bridges between peoples,” he said.
An eight-member delegation from Portimão attended the event and highlighted the strong connection the Portuguese community in Luxembourg maintains with its cultural roots.
The delegation also praised the warm welcome received from both the new confraternity and members of the local Portuguese community.
The newly established Sardine Confraternity of Luxembourg will now begin its activities with the aim of promoting Portuguese gastronomy, celebrating the cultural significance of the sardine and helping strengthen the visibility of Portuguese culture in the Grand Duchy.
