AC Milan have confirmed the appointment of Portuguese coach Rúben Amorim as their new head coach, bringing an end to months of speculation about the former Manchester United manager’s next move.
The Italian club announced the appointment on Tuesday, with Amorim replacing Massimiliano Allegri at the San Siro.
In a statement, Milan highlighted the 41-year-old’s achievements in Portugal, particularly during his highly successful spell at Sporting.
“After his initial coaching experiences at Casa Pia and SC Braga, he became Sporting’s head coach in March 2020, marking the beginning of a cycle defined by a strong playing identity, innovation and player development,” the club said.
“That period translated into tangible success, including two Portuguese league titles, two League Cups and a Super Cup. Most recently, he was head coach of Manchester United before joining Milan.”
“We have tracked Rúben for years and his Sporting tenure is extremely impressive and reflects the style of play that we are looking for. He is one of the most prepared and innovative coaches of the new European generation – young, ambitious, and with a modern footballing identity defined by dominating games in possession, a modern pressing system and a clear tactical approach,” said Gerry Cardinale, Managing Partner of RedBird Capital Partners, the controlling manager of the Italian club.
He added: “Rúben believes in high press attacking football with quick transitions that enable greater goal scoring. His philosophy aligns perfectly with our vision, while his leadership qualities and track record in developing players stood out to us. We believe in Rúben and are excited to welcome him to the club.”
Amorim had originally planned to remain out of management this season following his controversial departure from Manchester United in January after a difficult spell at Old Trafford, which saw him publicly criticise the English club’s board.
However, the opportunity to take charge of one of Europe’s most historic clubs proved impossible to resist.
The Portuguese coach has previously described Milan as one of the clubs he supported as a child and admitted that managing the Rossoneri was a long-held ambition.
“There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of mine,” said Rúben Amorim, cited in a club statement. “I know exactly what this club means: history, prestige and an extraordinary fanbase around the world. It is a challenge I embrace with pride and enthusiasm, fully aware of what these colors represent. I can’t wait to get started and to experience every day the passion that drives AC Milan.”
While Milan did not disclose the length of the agreement, reports in Portugal indicate that Amorim has signed a contract until 2028, with an option for a further year.
According to daily sports newspaper A Bola, the deal will see Amorim earn €3.5 million net per season, with additional bonuses linked to sporting success. The coach could reportedly receive €1 million if Milan win the Serie A title and a further €500,000 if the club qualifies for the UEFA Champions League.
Returning Milan to Europe’s premier club competition is expected to be one of Amorim’s primary objectives.
The seven-time European champions have endured a difficult period domestically, finishing eighth in Serie A in 2024/25 and fifth in 2025/26, missing out on Champions League qualification in both seasons.
Amorim arrives in Italy with a reputation as one of Portugal’s most highly regarded young coaches after transforming Sporting into champions and establishing an attractive, high-intensity style of play that attracted attention across Europe.
