Vice President Vance sparred with the hosts of ABC’s “The View” Tuesday over President Trump’s recent comments on inflation.
The show’s co-hosts pressed Vance on Trump’s comments on affordability and inflation while he appeared on the show to promote his new book.
When co-host Ana Navarro brought up Trump’s “I love the inflation” comment from last week, Vance pushed back.
“What he said, Ana, what he said is that he loves the fact that the inflation is going to come down when this war is over,” Vance said.
Trump made the comment in the Oval Office last week when asked about the latest high inflation numbers.
Co-host Whoopi Goldberg pushed back: “That’s not what he said.”
And the show’s co-host Joy Behar hit back with, “Are you his interpreter or are you his vice president? Come on.”
Vance doubled down to the hosts.
“Well, look, what the president said — people were asking about the inflation. They were asking about the affordability problem, which again is very real,” he said.
“And what he said is, ‘I love the inflation because it’s going to come down when the war is over.’ And now again, we already see gas prices today at $4.06 a gallon — too high,” he said. “But way down from where they were just a couple of weeks ago. So again, there’s a lot we’ve got to do, but I think that we’re doing as much as we can. We’re going to keep on working at it.”
The latest data shows the consumer price index rising to 4.2 percent over the last 12 months, an increase of 0.5 percent in May alone, according to the Labor Department.
“No, I love it. The numbers were great,” Trump said when asked about the numbers last week.
Vance also defended Trump about his comments calling affordability a “hoax” when the hosts asked why the president is focusing on the White House ballroom, the reflecting pool renovations and the UFC fight at the White House, among other projects.
“I’ve got to defend the president on the hoax point. What the president said is the idea that Republicans cause the affordability problem is a hoax, and I think that’s true,” Vance said. “If you go back to the Biden administration, inflation got up to 9 percent.”
“We inherited an affordability problem,” he added. “We’re doing a lot to make it better. It’s going to take a little bit of time.”
