‘Shrek 5’ Teaser Trailer Offers The Film’s First Plot Reveals

For the first time in 16 years, Shrek and Donkey are setting out on a new adventure. And now, thanks to a just-released teaser trailer, were getting a sense of what that adventure will entail.

Plot points for Shrek 5 have been kept quiet, but the teaser indicates the film involves Shrek, Donkey and Shrek’s family — which includes two sons and a daughter — “going on a journey to “off on another whirlwind big-city adventure,” according to Donkey.

Zendaya plays the daughter of Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz). Eddie Murphy, who voices Donkey, will reprise his role. Saturday Night Live‘s Marcello Hernández and Superman‘s Skyler Gisondo will voice the ogre couple’s sons, Fergus and Farkle.

Needless to say, the trip does not go as planned, and the group — minus Zendaya’s character — ends up in jail listening to Donkey bray away.

There’s also a quick jab at Disney’s Frozen.

Slated for release on December 23, 2026, Shrek 5 will be the first installment to hit theaters since Shrek Forever After all the way back in 2010.

Walt Dohrn (Trolls franchise), who worked on the second and third films as a writer and artist and as Head of Story on the fourth film, is directing alongside co-director Brad Ableson (Minions: The Rise of Gru), with The Trolls franchise’s Gina Shay returning to produce alongside Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri (The Super Mario Bros. Movie). DreamWorks Animation first announced Shrek 5 via its social media channels in 2024.
