The parents of a pregnant woman killed after falling onto the tracks at an Airport Rail Link station in 2017 have sought legal assistance as they continue a nine-year battle for compensation from the State Railway of Thailand (SRT).
Prasit Nota, a Nan MP from the Klatham Party, on Tuesday accompanied the victim's parents, Weera and Thanyaporn Plianla, to meet Supoj Ruangroj, a public prosecutor responsible for legal aid and rights protection in Nan province, to seek advice and follow up on the long-running case.
The case stems from an accident on June 19, 2017, when Rossarin Plianla, 31, from Wiang Sa district in Nan, fell onto the tracks at Ban Thap Chang Airport Rail Link station and was struck by a train. She was about six months pregnant.
The tragedy left the family devastated, as Rossarin had been the household's main breadwinner, supporting her parents and relatives.
Fighting back tears, Mr Weera said the family had spent years borrowing money from banks and loan sharks to cover legal and travel expenses while pursuing justice.
"We are ordinary villagers with limited means. Our daughter supported the whole family. When she died, everything fell apart," he said.
The family pursued legal action in hopes of justice for both Rossarin and her unborn child. Although the lower court ruled in their favour and ordered compensation of more than 2.9 million baht, the SRT appealed, leaving the case unresolved.
"Nine years have passed, and we have not received a single baht in compensation," Mr Weera said.
He said the family was seeking not only compensation but also accountability and compassion from the authorities.
"My daughter died together with the child she was carrying. Our family has suffered for nearly a decade. We only want the case to be considered fairly and without further delay," he said.
Mr Supoj said the case is under review by the Court of Appeal. He advised the family's lawyer to seek updates from court officials. He added that his office remained ready to provide legal assistance within its authority.
