French President Emmanuel Macron will host a dinner with President Trump at Versailles on Wednesday to celebrate the U.S.’s 250th birthday.
Macron’s office told The Associated Press on Saturday that the dinner will be held at the palace, “a historic symbol of Franco-American friendship.” Macron invited Trump to the dinner in April.
Trump told reporters about the dinner being held at Versailles, saying he is “a fan of beautiful places.”
“And then the French president, who happens to be a very nice man, invited me to dinner at Versailles,” he said. “And Versailles is not a gold leaf. Versailles is the real deal. And I said, ‘I’d like to do it.’ All it means is that I get home later in the evening, meaning early in the morning, and I’m not a big sleeper.”
The palace is used to host heads of state and foreign dignitaries, having once been the home of French kings until Louis XVI. In 2023, Macron hosted a dinner at the palace with King Charles III and Queen Camilla, along with several guests that included actor Hugh Grant and Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger.
French officials previously moved the Group of Seven (G7) summit back to this week to accommodate the UFC Freedom 250 fight at the White House on Sunday, which coincided with Trump’s 80th birthday.
Trump is in France for the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, having met with Macron and other world leaders one day after the U.S. and Iran agreed to a tentative agreement to extend the ceasefire 60 days to negotiate over the future of Iran’s nuclear program.
Macron was caught on a hot mic talking about Trump with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday.
“Yesterday, we had a difficult discussion in front of the camera,” Macron told his Ukrainian counterpart about the G7 meeting focused on the war in Ukraine following Zelensky’s arrival to the summit.
Macron also urged Zelensky to stay longer at the summit, with Zelensky replying that he is scheduled to go to Brussels the following day to speak with leaders of the European Union. The French president is also heard saying he will arrange a bilateral meeting with Trump and Zelensky.
Trump later confirmed on Tuesday that he and Zelensky will meet later in the day after speaking with each other briefly in the morning, surrounded by other G7 leaders.
The meeting held on Tuesday renewed discussions on the future of the war in Ukraine. Zelensky laid out his country’s need for more air defense missiles amid Russia’s airstrikes.
