A 96-year-old woman, Hajiya Umma Husaini, has died after she was allegedly attacked by her granddaughter in Daura, Katsina State.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Saturday at the family’s residence, where the suspect, identified as Aisha Muktar, allegedly struck the elderly woman with a mortar.
Sources said neighbours and relatives rushed to the scene and found the victim unconscious and bleeding profusely. She was immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Daura, for treatment.
However, she was later confirmed dead at the hospital.
Confirming the incident, the deceased’s eldest son, Muktar Husaini, said the family was devastated by the development.
“It is true that my mother was attacked and later died at the hospital. We are all in shock because she had no history of misunderstanding with anyone,” he said.
He described the deceased as a peaceful and patient woman who was respected by members of the community.
Family members said Hajiya Umma had lived with diabetes for several years, a condition that led to the amputation of both legs, but remained strong and devoted to her family despite her health challenges.
The spokesperson of the Katsina State Police Command, DSP Sadik Aliyu, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect had been taken into custody.
He said investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and the motive behind it.
The incident has sparked concern among residents of Daura, with community leaders and residents calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the deceased.
